2008 Staff
Director of Administration
Renee Richards
Renee
embarks on her 15th year and is currently the Co-Director of Channel Islands
Volleyball Club. Renee graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a BA in
Education. Renee currently works for the City of Ventura supervising camps, and
the PEAK after school programs. Renee’s passion for Volleyball is due to her
husband Jack, and their three daughters Janee, Lauren, and Jacki. Jack is the
head girl Varsity Coach at Buena High School, and the Head Coach for the 12’s,
13’s, and 14’s with CI. Janee played volleyball for Buena, CIVBC, VC, and
California State University Stanislaus. Lauren played for Buena, Channel Islands
Volleyball Club, and is currently playing for Concordia University in Portland
Oregon on a volleyball scholarship. Jacki is a junior at Buena playing Varsity,
and the last daughter left to play for Channel Islands. Renee and Channel
Islands Volleyball Club really is a great match, Renee truly respects and loves
this Club.
Director of Finance
Billy Arnold
Billy
has been the Co-Director of Channel Islands for 12 years. This is his 13h year
being involved with the Channel Islands Volleyball Club as director, coach or
parent. This will be his 15th visit to the Volleyball Festival. He has been
married to his wife Kathy for 34 years. Billy has two daughters, Danyelle and
Mandy. Billy coached most of his daughters’ soccer, softball, basketball and
volleyball teams. His daughter Mandy played in college and coaches for CI &
Ventura College. He has coached middle School boys and girls’ volleyball, HS
boys and girls’ volleyball, and several years of girls’ club volleyball. He was
founder and director of Placer Volleyball Club in Auburn (1990-92) and San
BuenaVentura Volleyball Club in Ventura(1993-96). He owns and operates a small
CPA practice in Ventura when he is not playing volleyball, basketball or
babysitting his twin granddaughters Isabella and Adrianna.
Director of Coaching
Head Coach – Senior Division (15s-18s)
Stacy Miller 18 Premier
Stacy
has coached for Channel Islands VBC for 16 years, ranging from the 14’s to the
18’s division. He is currently the Director of Coaching, Head coach of the
Senior Division (15’s-18’s), and the 18-1 head coach. Stacy led his 17-1 team to
a 10th place finish in the 2004 Reno Volleyball Festival. For the last four
years, his teams have been in the gold division during the SCVA season and in
the top 30 at the Reno Volleyball Festival. He is also in his 3rd season as an
assistant coach at Ventura College. His coaching background also includes 7
years of High school, 1 season with the Santa Barbara VBC, and 3 years at
Moorpark College. Stacy has attended the Coaching Accreditation Program courses
(CAP), level 1 and 2, plus several coaching seminars. He has also received a
certified Double Goal Coach with the Positive Coaching Alliance and is a Gold
level certified coach with the National Youth Sports Coaches Association. During
Stacy’s coaching tenure he has had over 30 players go on to play at the
collegiate level. His coaching philosophy is to provide a positive and
disciplined atmosphere where his players will have the ability to perfect their
skills and learn how to use those skills to be successful on the court. His
indoor playing background includes Ojai Volleyball Club and USVBA Men’s
Volleyball club where they competed in the power division. He has held an “A”
outdoor rating in both Beach and Grass volleyball. Stacy and wife Kari have two
children, Cody and Kacy. Stacy is looking forward to the opportunity to work
with all of the athletes at Channel Islands this season.
Head Coach – Junior Division (11s-14s)
Jack Richards 14 Premier
Jack
Richards offers a vast amount of experience and knowledge to the Channel Islands
Coaching Staff. Jack began his volleyball career as a setter for the College of
the Canyons Men’s Team during the years of 1975 and 1976. He also participated
and received a bronze medal in Doubles Volleyball in the Police Olympics in
1990, 1991 and 1992. Jack has coached at Buena High School since 1991, making
this year his 16th season coaching the Bulldogs. He has coached for Channel
Islands Volleyball Club since 1991 and is presently a Head Coach for the 12’s,
13’s and 14’s.He also encompasses all coaching certifications. Jack’s 12-Gold
team finished 14th overall at the Davis Volleyball Festival in 2002. He was
elected Channel League Coach of the Year during the years of 1998 and 2004. In
addition, during 2004 Jack was elected as CIF Coach of the Year Division 1. Jack
was recently honored as a National Finalist for the “Phil Jackson Positive
Coaching Award.” Jack and his wife Renee have three daughters who are all
extremely involved in volleyball. Janee, his oldest daughter coaches for Buena
and Channel Islands. Lauren is playing volleyball on scholarship at Concordia
University in Portland, Oregon. His youngest daughter Jacki, plays on the
Varsity Volleyball Team at Buena as well as returning for her 7th year at
Channel Islands. Jack is looking forward to a successful season for each and
every Channel Islands team and is truly looking forward to working with this
year’s athletes.
Janee Richards 17 Premier
Janee
began playing volleyball at the age of eight years. She played for Channel
Islands Volleyball Club for ten years as a setter. Janee attended Buena High and
played Varsity Volleyball all four years. She was named to first team all league
her Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. She received numerous awards including:
Golden Hands (3 years), Most Valuable Player (3 years), Most Inspirational (1
year) Scholar Award (2 years) and Most Valuable Player of the Gold Coast Classic
in 1998. She made all tournament team at the Cougar Classic during the years of
1998, 1999 and 2000. Her senior year she was recognized as Star’s Athlete of the
Week and later was recognized as one of six All Ventura County Volleyball
Players. Janee played two years at Ventura College under Coach Miki McFadden and
earned first team honors and Most Valuable Player of the collegiate Sequoias
Tournament. After Ventura College she received a scholarship to attend CSU
Stanislaus where she played libero and set a personal record leading in digs.
Presently, Janee coaches the Junior Varsity Volleyball Team at Buena High
School. She has coached 11 different teams ranging in ages from 12 to 17. This
will be her 6th year coaching for Channel Islands Volleyball Club and she
explicates a true passion in coaching her teams. She loves volleyball and
continues to play in local grass tournaments, and on county coed traveling
teams. She is a senior at CSU Channel Islands where she will receive her
Bachelor’s of Business Administration in the spring. Janee would like to wish
all the Channel Islands teams the best of luck this season. She is looking
forward to an exciting and fulfilling year for our club staff, athletes, parents
and supporters.
Mandy Arnold-Rodriguez 16 Premier
Mandy
attended Buena High School where she played volleyball and basketball. She also
attended Cerritos College. While at Cerritos Mandy received such honors as
Second Team All Conference and Honorable Mention All Conference. Mandy was the
starting setter on the women’s team at Whittier College in 1998 and 1999. While
at Whittier Mandy earned first and second team All SCIAC awards. She was
co-captain, co-mvp, and Female Team Sport Athlete of the year in 1999. Mandy
received her BA in Child Development in 2000. She continued on at Whittier
College as the Graduate Assistant for the women’s team pursuing her Master’s in
Education, which she received in May of 2002. Mandy has coached for such clubs
as Huntington Beach and Channel Islands. In 1998 & 1999 she was the men’s club
volleyball coach at Whittier. Mandy has also coached JV girls volleyball at La
Serna High School in Whittier. Mandy is in her 3rd season as the Head Women’s
Volleyball Coach at Ventura College. Mandy is married to Leo and has twin
daughters Isabella and Adrianna.
Kahoku Henson 16 Gold
I
graduated from Rio Mesa High School in 2001. I played for Rio Mesa from 1999 to
2001 and I was the MVP in 2000 and 2001. I made first team all league in 2001.
Ever since graduation I have helped out with the Rio Mesa volleyball program. I
started coaching in 2005. I was the boy's JV coach at Rio Mesa. We had an
impressive JV record of 16 and 2. In the fall of that year, I coached the
Hueneme girls Varsity team with Maurice Shimabuku. We went from a 1 and 12
season to a 5 and 8 season. In the winter of 2005, I assisted with the ACEZ
volleyball club. In the spring of 2006, I was named the head varsity coach of
the Rio Mesa boys team. We finished third in our league and lost to Santa Monica
in the playoffs. Also that year I was asked to coach the boys west all-star team
at Moorpark College. He has also been the head of the volleyball program at Rio
Mesa for boys and girls.
Alex Stein 15 Premier
Alex
played high school and juniors in New Jersey for Warren Six Pack Volleyball
Club. He was first team all state and won two straight state championships in
high school. He finished 2nd of the east coast with Warren Six Pack Volleyball
Club. He attended the University of Rhode Island and played club volleyball
there for 4 years. Alex is also an avid beach volleyball player. He has run
volleyball programs for inner city youth while in New Jersey. He has coached
junior boys, both 14s and 17s at two nationals as well as east coast
championships.
Cameron Ohl 14Gold
Cameron
has coached the girls JV volleyball at Ventura High School the last three years.
He has also coached high school boys and boys club volleyball. Cameron played
high school and college volleyball. This is his second season coaching with CI.
Mike Arnold Assistant Coach
Mike
Arnold – Started coaching in 1991 with the Oxnard High School J.V. team where he
served as the assistant coach. In 1992 Mike volunteered to help the girls teams
at Santa Clara. In 1993 Mike was assigned the J.V. coach and assisted for the
Varsity team. He held that position for six sessions. In 1999 Mike became the
Varsity coach and has held this position for the past seven sessions He was
named Frontier leagues “Coach of the Year” for the 2000 and 2002 sessions. Mike
has coached with the Channel Islands Volleyball Club for six years. Retiring in
June of 1999, Mike now spends his time coaching and volunteering at Santa Clara
church where he helps with the junior and high school youth groups and
confirmation program.
Lauren Richards 15 Silver
Lauren
graduated from Buena High School in 2005. She played 1 year of Junior Varsity
and 3 years of Varsity- earning 4 "Golden Hands" setting awards, 3 "Ace Server"
awards, 1 "Coaches Award", 1 MVP award, 3 Captain Titles, First Team All County,
First Team All League, and Second Team All CIF-SS Division IA. After her senior
year of high school, Lauren signed to play volleyball at Concordia University in
Portland, Oregon on all earned volleyball, academic and leadership scholarships.
While playing at Concordia, she averaged 11 assists per game, 1 block per game
and 1.5 ace per game, leading the program in all three categories. Her junior
year, Lauren earned the first "Setter of the Week" award of NAIA Division I
Cascade Conference of 2007. Lauren has coached three years of middle school
volleyball for VUSD and two seasons at Concordia Volleyball Summer Camps. She is
majoring in Elementary Education and has two semesters remaining before
completing her Bachelors Degree.
Gina Reyes Coach
Gina
played volleyball in high school. Gina had been coaching Middle School
volleyball for Sacred Heart School for 5 years. She has also coached the JV Boys
Volleyball at Rio Mesa High School for 1 year. She is in her second year
coaching JV girls volleyball for Santa Clara High school. This is Gina’s 5th
year coaching for Channel Islands. Gina is married to Carlos and has a daughter,
Kelli.
Eric Valdivia Assistant Coach
Eric graduated from Buena High School where he played volleyball for four years.
Eric coached Ventura Missionary School in the Christian Athletic League
Volleyball Program for three years. Eric is currently a student at Ventura
College.
Danielle Vaughn, 12s Coach
Danielle
played volleyball for four years at Buena High School. She currently is an
outside hitter and setter at Ventura College. Danielle played club volleyball
for seven years, six of those with CI. She has coached 12s for Balboa Middle
School and is a junior high volleyball referee. Danielle has many volleyball
awards including team captain, MVP, scholar award and 1st team all league. She
first played for CI as a 6th grader.
Brooke Anglin, 12s Coach
Brooke
played volleyball for four years at Buena High School. She currently is a setter
at Buena and for CI. This will be Brooke's 8th year playing for CI. She has many
volleyball awards including team captain, Golden Hands Award and all Channel
League. Brooke first played for CI as a 4th grader.
Kilei Phipps, 12s Coach
Kilei
played volleyball for four years at Buena High School. She currently is the
starting middle blocker at Ventura College. Kilei played club volleyball for
seven years, five of those with CI. She has worked at the VC volleyball clinic
and is a junior high volleyball referee. Kilei has many volleyball awards
including Steppin Up Award, Roof Award and Channel League Honorable Mention.
Kilei first played for CI as a 6th grader.
Jacki Richards, 12s Coach
Jacki
began playing for Channel Islands as a third grader. She is now a starting
opposite for the 18-Premier team. She played one season of JV volleyball as a
freshman at Buena and then spent three years on the Varsity team. At the end of
her junior season, she was named to the All Channel League Second Team. She has
been awarded Best All Around, Ace Server, Hustle Award, Top Gun, MVP, Krista
Romero Perseverance Award and was selected as a Ventura County Top High School
Athlete while playing for Buena. She was a co-captain her junior and senior
seasons for both Buena and Channel Islands. At the end of her senior season with
Buena she was awarded All Channel League First Team and was one of six players
in Ventura County to be named to First Team All Ventura County. Jacki has made
honor roll every semester of her high school years. She plans to continue to
play volleyball in college this fall.
